Best Views in New York City

New York. Sigh. What a wonderful city. And worthy of not one, not two, but three New York City themed blog posts. You’ve heard about the top places to eat in New York city, as well as the top places to visit as a first timer to the big apple. But now I wanted to give you a few suggestion on where to go if you want to get the best views of the city. Where you can see the city from a different perspective.

1. The High Line

In 1934 the High Line opened to trains but due to years of disinterest in the service it closed in the 80’s. Parts of it reopened to the public to explore in 2009 and more and more of the line became accessible in the following few years. We decided to have a morning walk along the track armed with tea and Levain Bakery cookies. It’s a relaxing walk and a great opportunity to see the city in a different light.

2. Brooklyn Bridge

Ok so this one isn’t totally off the beaten track and unknown to you all, but it’s something fun to do whilst in New York. The Brooklyn Bridge, albeit crowded during the weekend with tourists, is a great place to watch people, and the city they’re commuting to. Runners and cyclists are constantly moving up and down the paths using the bridge as a means to get to and from work. What made the bridge great for me was the view of the traffic below, the honking horns, the yellow cabs, it was all very New York and I loved it. Plus if you’re into getting symmetrical photos this bridge will do the trick.

3. DUMBO

DUMBO, otherwise known as Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass is a great place to visit when in Brooklyn. Despite the rain we had a great time in the area. You’re treated to wonderful views of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges (like the one above). You’ll find plenty of cobbled streets and huge Brooklyn warehouses scattered around. My favourite part was the views of Manhattan you got from the waters edge.

4. From up high

There’s something about seeing a city from above it that makes you really appreciate it and understand it in a completely different way. Whenever I’m in a different city I try to find something to climb in order to get some stunning views. And in New York it was no different. We decided on our first full day to visit Top of the Rock to get a birds eye view of the city. And what a view it was. On the ground you have the hustle and bustle of a busy city, but from above you get complete silence and some wonderful views. So whether you go to the top of the Empire State, get a helicopter ride over the city or head to the Top of the Rock like we did be sure to make the most of seeing the city from above, because it sure is wonderful.

I’d love to hear from you if you’ve done any of the activities I’ve mentioned above, or if you have any suggestions for future trips to the city.

Until next time.
